My name is James McClam, and I consider myself to be a budding visionary focused on the art of theater. Throughout my childhood, I had a deep curiosity for the stage. Each time my parents took me to see a play, it was an euphoric experience. Those two hours allowed me to experience the world in a different way. I began to understand that theatre brings out true humanity in people, while also having the power to change the world unify through different perspectives. I know my impact on the world will be through artistic expression on stage. I want to recreate the emotions I felt in the audience as a child - true wonder and authenticity. An audience can discover courage and vulnerability while being entertained and see the benefits of these qualities in their personal lives. When I create or perform a story, I share a part of myself, my perspective, my soul. The Black British Theatre program will allow me to discover more about craft, and how to enhance and unleash my potential as a writer, director and actor all while gaining more knowledge on my culture.
I chose to attend the Chadwick Boseman College of Fine Arts at Howard University to grow and discover how to make a true impact on the community through the guidance and tutelage of black creatives. At Howard, I am surrounded by like-minded individuals, people that want to change the world and add a new outlook on what life can truly be. I chose Howard to have the freedom to be myself unabashedly.
